Summer Adventures in Madison with Little Kids & Toddlers

There’s something magical about summer in Madison, Wisconsin—sunny days at the lake, farmers’ markets bursting with color, and endless opportunities for families to make memories together. As a mom and a family photographer, I’m always on the lookout for simple, joyful experiences to share with my little ones—and to recommend to the families I photograph.

If you’re looking for inspiration to fill your summer with smiles, here are my favorite toddler- and kid-friendly spots around Madison:

1. Henry Vilas Zoo (Free!)

You can’t beat a free zoo—and Madison’s Henry Vilas Zoo is such a gem. It’s just the right size for little legs, with animals to see, a sweet carousel, and a playground perfect for mid-morning energy bursts. Bring a stroller and a snack and enjoy a couple of hours of low-stress fun.

Photo idea: A morning at the zoo makes for adorable candid moments—don’t forget your camera for those tiny hand-and-elephant trunk moments!

2. Olbrich Botanical Gardens & Splash Pad at Olbrich Park

Wander through the flowers at Olbrich Botanical Gardens for a sensory adventure—colorful blooms, buzzing bees, and shaded paths are perfect for toddler exploring. Just across the street at Olbrich Park, there’s a fun splash pad to cool down in the afternoon.

Pro tip: Keep a towel and change of clothes in the car for post-splashing picnics by Lake Monona.

3. Madison Children’s Museum

When the weather turns too hot (or rainy), the Madison Children’s Museum is the place to go. With an indoor climbing structure, water play, rooftop garden, and interactive exhibits, toddlers and young kids can explore safely while having a blast.

Creative tip: The museum’s rooftop chickens and view of the Capitol are both surprisingly photogenic.

4. Local Farmers’ Markets

The Dane County Farmers’ Market around Capitol Square on Saturdays is a sensory adventure—live music, fresh fruit samples, and space to toddle around. For a calmer option, the Monona or Westside markets are perfect for strollers and less-crowded vibes.

Idea: Let your little one pick out their own fruit or flower bouquet—it’s sweet, empowering, and makes for an adorable photo opp.

5. A Picnic + Mini Hike at Picnic Point

Pack a lunch, a bubble wand, and take a stroll along the easy trail to Picnic Point. The shaded path is stroller-friendly, and there are so many places to stop and play. The breeze off Lake Mendota is the cherry on top.

6. Explore a New Park Each Week

Madison is full of amazing parks and playgrounds—why not make it a summer bucket list to try a new one each week? Some local favorites for toddlers:

Bonus: Book a Summer Session

Summer is such a fleeting season—bare feet, golden light, and sticky popsicle smiles. If you’re soaking up these days with little ones, let’s freeze time together with a summer portrait session. We’ll head to a sunny field, a favorite park, or even your backyard and capture the magic of your family right now—giggles, freckles, and all.
